The M-Audio Duo does in fact use INA163 chips for the mic preamp stage.
I don't know why Doug says the R1/R4 is not much better than the Duo.
On the other hand, I haven't done a head-to-head on the mic pre
stages.
And an INA163 can be used well or poorly. The Duo uses an AC wallwart
and +/- 15 volt rails (if I remember my poking around correctly),
while the Edirol portables run on 2 AA cells for 2.7 volts total
(unless there's a DC-DC boost converter in there).
The R1 case opens pretty easily, but the mic and display sub assemblies
hide the analog part of the circuit board, so I can't easily report
on the chips used.
