I set the Sharp MD-MT90 at 17, my standard nature recording level. I 
matched the Edirol's level to it, though not necessarily the gain 
(phones level was in the picture, too). The Edirol's meter is lousy, 
and the record gain control is a little thumbwheel. You'd have to 
paint colored dots on it or something to achieve repeatability.
