Jerry: Another space saver to consider is FLAC (a lossless audio compressor that can usually reduce files sizes by a factor of 2 or more). It is an open standrard and there are free versions for most platforms. By the way, I went through the process you're doing now (digitizing with different parameters and listening to the results) and learned a lot from the process as well as from looking at sonograms of the differently digitized files. In the end I concluded, as everyone else has indicated, that 16/44.1 (or whatever your machine will do) is usually worth the extra disk space. Cheers!
