Hi Julian--
In principle, a better quality mic->line preamp is a work-around. Is
the Maycom higher quality then the mic->line preamp that's built into
the 670? Maybe someone has A/B compared maycom+670 line-in vs. 670
mic input alone for an applicable microphone and can report. I can't
tell whether the Maycom provides phantom power. 55db gain is a
little shy for a full line level signal with some mics. It would take
two Maycoms for stereo, right? My hunch: probably not, but it would
be great if I'm wrong. Low noise and high gain are expensive
qualities to manufacture.

The only "steal" on a low noise, high quality stereo mic preamp with
phantom power I know of is a used Symetrix SX202, BUT it requires an
120vac "wall wart." I use one on a 12volt inverter in the field for
extra channels, but I wouldn't consider this arrangement "portable."
There are two SX202's on eBay now; they've been selling used in the
$130-$150 range. After this, I think the RME QuadMic, which Rich Peet
uses, sounds very nice for $400 (older exchange rate). Its portable
w/4 channels! Rob D.
