Dan-- Thanks for sharing your secret of using the Shure 183 capsules
for MD recording. After studying Shure's wiring diagram, I decided to
cut off the mini xlr's and solder the C122 cables directly to a 3.5mm
stereo plug. (Very easy to do once you get those stubborn jackets off
of the black and red leads.)

I tried them out last night and a bit today on a Sony NH-900, Wow!
Did some A/B comparisons with the NT4 and the "DIY special" Panasonic
WM-61a's and I'm getting much less noise and smoother response with
the 183's compared to these other two mics. The output is about the
same as the WM-61a's but the noise is quite a bit lower and its much
higher in pitch and more concentrated (~8.3KHz is one spot). To my
ears, the 183's are considerably more transparent than the other two
mics with excellent character in the mids (600Hz->) and an
expressive, well-balanced bottom end down to 40 Hz. The output levels
of the two capsules they happened to send me are quite close. The
omni capsules screw into sturdy, metal cases; other polar patterns
are also available.

The 183's seem to be the low noise, lower cost, low profile,
plug-in-power omni's I've been searching for for a long time. They're
good enough to make me wonder how much trouble it would be to wire
them balanced preserving the voltage for the extra kick. Would the
183's work for a stereo parabolic dish mic upgrade or do you think
they might be too hot, Dan?
Best,
Rob D.

The parts I used in the pair I soldered-up are:

2- Shure R183B
2- Shure C122
1- 3.5mm stereo mini plug.
