the salt has effects on wildlife as well...mammals are attracted to it to
some degree and wind up as road kill....so can the motorist if it's a deer /
elk / moose that gets whacked.

Many of the northern finches congregate in the middle of recently salted
roads; not sure if they're eating the salt or gritting with the mixed in
sand...in any case, the winter carnage of redpolls, crossbills and pine
grosbeaks is truly disheartening...unless you happen to be a raven.
