There's a distinction between an
attenuator and an impedence matching
cable. The attenuator reduces the
pre-amp's sensitivity to sound, making
it possible to record in an environment
with very high sound pressure (i.e.,
a rock concert). An impedence matching
cable raises the impedence of the
microphone input so it's closer to
the impedence of the minidisc input.

Most pro mics have output impedence
of 150 or 600 ohms (considered low
impedence). Minidisc pre-amps have
input impedence around 1000 to 2000 ohms.
(medium impedence). Some devices have
high impedence, above 10,000 ohms.
By matching the impedence, you can
make the recording louder by 5 or 10dB.

Shure makes a variety of cables that
include circuitry to match impedence.
The Shure A96F has a mono XLR on one end
and a 3.5mm mini-phono plug on the other.
I use this cable with a Sennheiser mic,
and the result is noticeably louder recordings.
Read about it here

Cheapest source I've seen for the Shure
A96F is $36 at
