The Sony MD makes a crap playback machine.
That is as far as I will make a recommendation on the topic.
I have heard too much playback in the last year to support any of it.

Don't forget your recording documentation. "sound recorded in 
response to playback."  

Therefore, if you use playback you are not looking to record natural 
sound.

Don't hold it against the group or your post if you only get a few 
responses to the question.  You may get better advise dierect and off 
list.
