Hello Walt, Thanks a lot for your advice. I switched the headphone setting to "line out" and now the speakers work much better. Oh boy, I guess it's time to start reading users' manuals more carefully. Even though my Sony MZ-N10 manual is quite incomplete and explains things very poorly.
