I loved Jim's story (Vignette) about someone trying to find a Conneticut
warbler with playback (ultimately finding another recordist using playback deep
in the bush).
I got a beautiful recording of a Conneticut warbler at night about a month ago;
but that is another story-
A friend of mine is really good at immitating owls. Dick has several times
called in owls that I subsequently recorded. I had to be really careful to
announce on the discs when Dick had called, because it was almost impossible to
tell the difference.This same man was leading a Team in the Okanagan Valley, BC
for the Big Bird Day count several years ago when one of his team members (in
the dead of night) excitedly reported that he had just heard a Western screech,
a Great horned and a Saw-whet across the valley.Dick got out of the car and
said" wait a minute". He then imitated the three owls in order. Almost
immediately, the three owls replied from the other side of the valley. Dick
turned to his teammate and said, "Sorry, thats my twin brother ,Sid". Thats a
true story.
