Nature Recordists,

If you're interested in direct-to-hard-disc
recording at higher sampling rates, check
out the UltraSoundGate system:
http://www.avisoft-saslab.com/usg/usg124.htm

This mic pre-amp and analog to digital
converter is the product of Raimund Specht,
a new member of this group. The UltraSoundGate
is capable of sampling up to 24 bits, 128,000
times per second for mono audio, delivered to
a PC via USB.

Here's a close-up photo:

The UltraSoundGate and AviSoft software products
have their origin in research on bats and
insects.

The UltraSoundGate is expensive, as you might
expect of a hand-crafted, low-volume product.=20
I have been unable to find anything else like
the UltraSoundGate (portable, field-worthy,
ultra-high digitizing rate) available for sale.

For those who may think it's burdensome to
deal with a computer in the field, take a
look at this photo of the UltraSoundGate
in use with a Sony ultralight laptop:

For more on very small PC laptops, a good
place to start is
