I am sorry Evert, but you seem to be missing an important distinction I made
in my reply. What I have been stating is not in regard to global volume
differences, but in frequency peaks and valleys within a given recording. I
can sure as hell tell the difference if the left channel is 3dB down from
the right channel (or even 1.5dB for that matter) but I would not be able to
tell that the left mic has a slight 1.5dB peak around 3K as compared to the
right mic. This was the issue that concerned Tom and the issue that I
addressed.
Thanks
S

Hi,
I have done that; listening to a fieldrecording that had a 3 dB level
difference between the right and left; it was very obvious. Just
listen to it with low levels; some will drop out of the spectrum, and
some will clearly stand out. Just as simple as that.
Maybe it helps to be a musician? 'cos I am, that might be the trick :)
Regards, Evert
