I had a idea of something that might be interesting in this regard where
you are recording insects in short grass. Think about the image of a
person out with a metal detector. Build something like that, with the
mic mounted PZM style on the bottom of the disk (detector coil is what
it is in metal detecting). Use a plastic plate or some such for your
disk. Then you could wander around the field sweeping for calls the same
way folks detect coins. Should be a comfortable way to get a mic in the
right position.
