Graham,
I straight away thought the same as Peter. How
about a Red Wattlebird. Be aware that for many species of bird, the range
of their available calls is far more than what you would get on a selection,
such as the COG tape. The Red Wattlebird is certainly one of these. So (whilst
that may not be it) don't rule it out on the basis that it is different to
something you have heard on a commercial source. They can't include all the
calls. I wouldn't worry, they are so abundant you'll get to know them. You later
mentioned White-eared Honeyeater but you wouldn't think of that as "a little
smaller than a magpie". They are much smaller.
