The humming line does seem to have worked - for now. The CRs spend a lot of time (as they usually do) in the hakea and melaluca etc about 5 metres from my balcony, but they have not gone to the wisteria (except the juvenile CR - very briefly). The remaining leaf and flower buds are doing well. So the humming line seems suitable as not being harmful to the birds or repelling them from the garden completely, but just protecting plants where netting isn't appropriate. The Garden in Dickson has humming line in stock. It's also available online, esp from boating supplies - to keep the gulls away from moored boats.. .
