Greetings all:  The long-term protection of the Central Molonglo Valley has been a key conservation issue for COG and many of you have taken an interest in this.  Here is an update on how things stand.  While we are pleased with this progress, we need to keep up the pressure on our politicians.  There will be expert speakers on different aspects. I encourage you to attend the Forum on 16 Sept which is organised by the ACT Collaboration of which the Conservation Council is a part.  We need lots of people to attend this to show our politicians how committed the community is to this issue.  There is no need to book.
cheers
Jenny

The Central Molonglo woodlands have been removed from the Draft Variation to the Territory Plan!

On 19th August the ACT Standing Committee on Planning and Environment released the report of its inquiry into the Molonglo urban development. This recommended:
? Central Molonglo be removed in perpetuity from being considered for urban development
? retention and management of remnant pockets of Yellow Box-Red Gum Grassy Woodland in East Molonglo for conservation purposes
? expansion of the Kama Nature Reserve to provide a more significant wildlife corridor
? location of the Critical Management Zone for bushfire protection outside the Kama Nature Reserve
? the ACT Government consider implementing a system of conservation leases in the Central Molonglo area
? the lake option not proceed unless it receives community support
? cat containment be mandatory for the whole Molonglo and North Weston region, and
? maximisation of solar block orientation for residential development Molonglo and North Weston.

The ACT Government responded by removing the whole of Central Molonglo from the DV and indicating that they would implement the rest of the Committee?s recommendations if re-elected to government. But as we know, in politics, nothing is safe until it?s sure.

We need to keep the pressure on to ensure that after the election whatever the makeup of the incoming ACT Government that they actually commit to and enact these recommendations. To this end, the ACT Collaboration is holding the pre-election Molonglo Forum.

Pre-Election Forum on the Molonglo Urban Development

The ACT Collaboration invites you to a public Pre-Election Forum on the Molonglo Urban Development. The ACT Collaboration has invited one candidate from each of the political parties to speak at the forum on their party?s position on the Molonglo urban development. The ACT Collaboration will set the scene by presenting a vision for Molonglo in relation to ecological conservation, urban water management, affordable and energy efficient housing, and sustainable transport.

When: Tuesday 16th September 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Where: Shine Dome, Australian Academy of Science, Gordon Street, ACTON

The ACT Collaboration is a partnership of peak ACT organisations and individuals, working together to create a sustainable. For more information on the ACT Collaboration click here
