Roger - Briefly:
1 The CS adult and BG adult have almost identical
colouration. Immatures of both are different (darker, browner) and
resemble one another
2 In the below, 1 and 4 are BGs, 2 and 3 CSs
3 Appropriately, the guides draw attention to
structural features as the best way to distinguish the 2 species (eye, tail,
feet). Shape is not a good guide as the females of both can appear bulkier.

Subject: Collared Sparrowhawk in Calwell
Hi Philip
This confusion with the Brown Goshawk puzzles me!
The two birds don't look
alike to me at all!! Yet Simpson\Day Field Guide
show almost identical
drawings. I have seen Brown Goshawks and they are
much darker and bigger
than the bird I photographed in my backyard. I am
assuming a female as I
estimated her size around 35cms. The bird she was
with was definitely
smaller, so I am assuming again that is the male.
My initial process of
elimination was through the Grey Goshawk, hence the
filename (which I have
now changed), but there were several differing features
that eliminated it.
There are many differing features between the Collared
Sparrowhawk and the
Brown Goshawk as well. Colour, size, feet
etc.. Personally I think the
field guide is very misleading to compare the two.
Is there a better field
guide out there?
Not bad first email to the group - spelt the name wrong
(it was a typo!),
overloaded the system with the photo! At least so
far I haven't crashed the
system!
Roger
Hi Roger,
It is an adult. Can't tell what sex. By the head shape it
looks more like a
Collared Sparrowhawk than a Brown Goshawk. Minor point is
the e in
"Collared".
