Black Noddy ethics

I agree that many serious birdwatchers are "tickers" but the converse alas
is not true. Brought home to me at O'Reilly's last year when a "ticker"
refused to get off a bus to see an Azure Kingfisher on the grounds that he
had already seen that bird!

I agree, a confirmed mental image of seeing the bird is a positive tick.
A "I must have seen it" is not a mental image of seeing the bird and
therefore not a tick.

While on the subject of bird watching and ticking. When I was younger it
was impressed on me by some serious birders that "tickers" were not real
bird watchers. I carried that with me for many years and condemned
tickers when really I did not know what ticking was. Wasted many years.
Have since met some pretty serious bird watchers who would be considered
tickers. I can say that they enjoy their bird watching as much as
anybody and know as much if not more about their birds as anyone else.
For me now compiling a list of seen and target species and researching
these allows me to systematically focus effort and expense on new birds
and is very rewarding. When visiting a location during a limited holiday
break one can really only afford to have the best look at each of as
many birds as possible within the time available and move on.

Dave...It all comes down to how you define things. If you are talking
about
a list of birds you have seen, then I definitely would not tick it. Just
because a bird has been in your field of vision doesn't mean you have
seen
it. Imagine if you were with a group of birders and they later said to
you:
"Did you see the Black Noddy?" and you replied, "No", and then they
said:
"Well, you were looking right at it!" You wouldn't tick it on the
strength
of that would you? I think that, semantically, saying you have "seen"
something implies a conscious perception at the time of seeing. You have
'seen' a Black Noddy in your photograph, that is all. My opinion.

Some of you may have read my recent posts about a trip to Michelmas
Cay last week and the fact that i didn't see any Black Noddy's.
Well I am just going through my photos in more detail and i have
found a Black Noddy in a photo!!
Does it count as a tick or not??
