John,I do remember the late Barry Bucholtz telling me that aborigal elders thought it used to be common before introduction of the domestic cat. Regards, Simon. From: "John Penhallurick" <> To: <> Subject: [Birding-Aus] night parrot Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2007 11:58:32 +1100 Hi all, Just back on Day release from the hospital where I was confined for a week after a week's excruciating pain from my lower back. I did see the article in the Australian about the recovery of the night parrot corpse, and noted the statement that the species had suffered a"catastrophic" decline in the nineteenth century. As far as I am aware thereis no evidence to support this statament. All we know is that the guy whocollected all known specimens in museums in South Australia left no notes onhow or why he was able to collect so many birds. Asa far as I know, theyknew as little about this species in the nineteenth century as we did in thetwentieth & to the present day!
