As a medium term observer (2008ish) and very rare contributor to the birds aus forum, I'd like to say that: 1) the patronizing (yes, it's the American spelling) behavior definitely exists; 2) it is by a minority of contributors; 3) it is unpleasant and off putting, and I suspect not only to new comers; 4) is occasionally but not often enough, challenged by other members of the forum. My observation is that it is often about a contributor showing off more than anything else. I'm glad the issue was raised. This behavior does not belong here.
