Published sightings for the week ending 3 Feb 2013.

Sat 2 Feb Sooty Tern, Plumed Whistling-Duck and Glossy Ibis Oxley Creek Common Brisbane
One adult and one juv present at Pelican Lagoon for at least 20 minutes early am. Looked healthy and were dipping into lagoons. Also a pair of Plumed Whistling-Duck, 3 Glossy Ibis and though not a biggy, a pair of Silver Gull which from my understanding are not regulars.

Lewin's Rail FRAZER 1' Cell
Lewin's Rail (1) Got good photo at last. Flew over Gold Creek and then came back close to the hide. Must be breeding as I saw juvenile yesterday and adult was calling nearby. Saw chick some weeks ago, which may be the juvenile.

Square-tailed kite over our place yesterday & today 3 apostlebirds near Colleges (Ipswich side)

Tue 29 Jan Immature Sooty Tern Old Mt Alford Road , Dugendan, Queensland
After subsidence of floods in area ( due to aftermath of Cyclone Oswald ) bird found next to road looking distressed and lost. retrieved and handed to local vet who passed it on to carer. Apparently released on the 30th.

Mon 28 Jan Pomarine Jaegaer Flinders Pde, Brighton
An early morning drive along Flinders Pde saw the Sooty Terns, Common Noddy and an immature dark Pomarine Jaeger

Black and Common Noddies, Bridled and Sooty terms Kirra beach, Gold Coast
Seen today were plenty of black and common noddies, bridled and sooty terms. Another single bird viewed from the road keeping rather low over the waves due to wind. Distinct species uncertain due to the fact I was trying to keep my car on the road too. What a day.

Masked Booby, Brown Booby, Red-footed Booby, Streaked Shearwater Point Danger
In addition to Stuart Pickering's report, in the afternoon I had 1 adult Masked Booby, 5 adult Brown Booby, 1 int. phase Red-footed Booby, 1 Streaked Shearwater. In the evening large nos of Common noddy, Black Noddy, Bridled & Sooty Terns on the lawns and parks North of Point Danger. Note we also had a full adult Australasian Gannet - a very rare summer bird up here!

Frigatebirds Shorncliffe Pier
One male Lesser Frigatebird over entrance to Cabbage Tree Creek at 5pm. Five Frigatebird sp soaring in vicinity of pier all female/immatures - perhaps a couple of Great Frigatebirds, but a little out of practice on this difficult group!

Noddies/Terns Coolangatta and Kirra Beach
Highlights of a walk around this area were a small flock of Grey Ternlets seen inshore, at least 5 birds. Also 10 Black Noddies, (8 seen together behind the beach), a few Common Noddies, 3 Bridled and many Sooty Terns, 3 Arctic and 2 Pom Skuas. Also 2 Wandering Tattlers seen sheltering behind the beach in very rough conditions!

Sooty Terns and noddies Shorncliffe
About fifteen Sooty Terns, a dozen Common Noddies, one Black Noddy still hanging around at lunch time, plus twenty or more Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. An immature Sooty Tern at nearby Dowse Lagoon with Whiskered, Common and a Little, but no wagtail. A dead adult Sooty Tern on nearby Kirsten Pike Oval, Board Street.

Black Bittern FRAZER 1' Cell
Black Bittern (1) Sitting quietly in tree over Gold Creek. Took several clear photos from about 20m. with a 400mm lens. Very dark male with strong gold marking.

Common Noddy Shorncliffe
Dozens of Common Noddies heading out of Cabbage Tree Creek towards the bay. 30 counted in one flock alone. Three birds resting on the retaining wall when I first arrived at Baxters Jetty.

Bridled Tern Shorncliffe
Among the dozens of Sooty Terns seen off Baxters Jetty, were a few Bridled Terns. Many of the exhausted Terns and Noddies were resting on grass along Allpass parade until the hoards of sight-seers began to disturb them.

Odd sighting of a few Wedge-tailed Shearwaters at the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek. Fighting hard against the wind and occasionally resting on the water.

Lesser Frigatebird Shorncliffe
Two Lesser Frigatebirds this morning seen from Baxters Jetty, Allpass Parade. One male and one female. Extraordinary numbers of seabirds blown into the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek by strong winds.

Sooty Tern Anstead Bush Reserve
Six Sooty Terns along the Brisbane River this morning, the 172nd species for the reserve. An oddity: Silver Gull is not on the site list.

1 bird seen at 5:00pm in shrubs in garden and roosted there over night. First time I have seen this species in this area of inner Brisbane
