Pink-eared Duck, Red-backed Kingfisher, Cockatiel
Old Flinders Hwy, Woodstock to Ross River Dam
Pink-eared Duck (26) On the most southerly (Private Property) Mount View Station dam and easily viewable from the Old Flinders Highway. Numbers have increased since Joan Wharton found and reported yesterday, Saturday afternoon 02-02-2013
Red-backed Kingfisher (1) First record for 2013. Found in this area but moreso in the dryer winter months.
Cockatiel (12) This small in-flight flock appearrs to be first arrivals for the season. Heading north-west over the intersection of Buck and Gunnado Road. They did not land for as long as we could see them.

Old Flinders Highway, 100 metres to the right of Gunnado Rd
4 Pink-eared Ducks on the very full Dam on Mount View Station (Private Property). Visible from the road through binos or scope. Hundreds of Magpie Geese as well as Royal Spoonbills, Pacific Black Ducks, Grey Teal, Black-winged Stilts (3). Seen at 6.30pm.

Fork-tailed Swift; White-throated Needletail
Toomulla
From 8-9am we watched a mixed flock of hundreds of Fork-tailed Swifts and White-throated Needletails flying north over the reforested area and road from the Bruce Highway to Toomulla. For the hour we watched them, the group became less dense and there were lots of stragglers.

Pale-vented Bush-hen
Kelso
Period from New Year's Day 2013 to today, a breeding pair of Pale-vented Bush-hens. For many years a breeding pair have appeared annually on our acreage property at Kelso and have bred successfully. This season they have been here since late November and appear to have successfully weathered the recent deluge of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.

Eastern Barn Owl
Townsville Port Access Road - North of Bruce Highway, Stuart
An Eastern Barn Owl was spotlighted on a roadway sign at 10.40pm. Two other Eastern Barn Owls were seen on the same night flying in the vicinity the port access road. The Townsville Port Access Road is also known as Southern Port Road (Stuart Bypass)

Fork-tailed Swift; White-throated Needletail
Cungulla to Cape Cleveland Road
Dense flock of thousands of Fork-tailed Swifts and White-throated Needletails seen from the coastal township of Cungulla west along Goodsell Road and Carty Road to the intersection of Cape Cleveland Road from 12.30pm - 2.30pm, all heading north. Primary species was Fork-tailed Swift with only a very small proportion of White-throated Needletail.

SIXTEEN birds in Narrow-leafed Ironbark in feeding flock. Blown down from Carbine Tableland in recent cyclonic episode. Unusual number.

Horseshoe Bay, Magnetic Island
At least 60 Lesser Frigatebirds above Horseshoe Bay, no doubt blown in as a result of ex-cyclone Oswald.
