Brush Cuckoo
Dickson Oval
From 17:52 to 18:40 on the evening of 23 August 2011 a Brush Cuckoo was calling from one of the small Eucalyptus (E. melliodora) behind the bus stop on Antill Street almost opposite Cadell Street, Dickson ACT. Not only is it unusual to find a Brush Cuckoo in Dickson but I have not recorded this species in August previously in the ACT. I have seen them previously on both Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura in September and October in the wetter seasons of the late 1980s.
I rate this species as a true harbinger of spring and its appearance accords with observations of many other summer visitors reported in recent days.
The ACT Bird Atlas (1992) states that " in exceptional years, individuals appear in August [in the lower parts of the ACT below 700m]"
