Published sightings for the week ending 9 May 2010.

Sun 9 May Bassian Thrush Barrengarry Mountain & Fitzroy Falls
I saw five Bassian Thrushes late this afternoon. Three were foraging in
the magnificent rainforest of Barrengarry Mountain (located between
Kangaroo Valley and Fitzroy Falls) by enormous moss-covered boulders and
coachwoods, and the other two were adjacent to the public carpark at
Fitzroy Falls, happily hunting out in the open. Other highlights at
Fitzroy Falls (along the East Rim Track) were: Pilotbird (one bird
foraged six-foot ahead of me for five minutes), Yellow-throated
Scrubwren, Superb Lyrebird, many Varied Sittella, Eastern Shrike-tit,
Rose Robin and Satin Bowerbird.

        Little Eagle Moss Vale
One bird soaring over Seymour Park mid-morning. The bird was being
harassed by Australian Magpies and Little Ravens. This is only the third
time I've seen a Little Eagle in the Southern Highlands and a first for
my home list.

Sat 8 May Eastern Osprey Manildra Ethanol Plant, Bomaderry
Two birds observed interacting around the plant.

Bassian Thrush Mitchell Park, Cattai, NSW
My friend Graham Turner and I had the opportunity to hear and then
observe this rather secretive species near the start of the rainforest
track along Cattai Creek. We were alerted by its calls first and it
uncannily sounded like a Common Blackbird at times.
Ákos Lumnitzer

        Topknot Pigeon Huntley's Cove
A flock of 14 flew over Huntley's Cove, near Gladesville. Simmilar sized
flocks of Figbirds were seen as well. Local figs and Camphor laurels
currently laden with fruit.

Scarlet Robins Air Services land at Shanes Park (approx. 10 km
west of Blacktown CBD)
I had a good few hours this morning of photography and birding at Shanes
Park near Blacktown. There was a large mixed species flock of birds
including a pair of Scarlet Robins as well as a few Rose Robins, 4
Speckled Warblers with lots of Buff-rumped Thonbills, 3 Shining
Bronze-cuckoos and a Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Varied Sitellas, Brown-headed
Honeyeaters etc. Musk Lorikeets and Dusky Woodswallows also flew
overhead. I also looked along the creek to see if the Noisy Pitta
returned this year (it was about this time last year when we had one
there for a few weeks) but instead I had 2 very close encounters with
Red-bellied Black Snakes sunning themselves over the undergrowth.

Fri 7 May Regent Honeyeater (update) Putty Road, Milbrodale
10 Regents seen today at the Putty Road site, quite contently feeding on
lerp and occasionally dunking into the small farm dams in front of the
houses. The birds are very much favouring the trees along the road. They
were quite vocal today too.
Mick Roderick

Thu 6 May Grey Goshawk (white morph) Coopers Shoot, near Byron Bay
1 bird (probably male due to small-ish size) being harassed by
Blue-faced Honeyeaters and Australian Magpies. It landed in a tree, but
flew out about 2 minutes later, with the honeyeaters and magpies
continuing to chase it.

Wed 5 May Brahminy Kite Walsh Point Reserve, Newcastle
A single adult Brahminy Kite cruising up and down the River at Walsh
Point at 3:30-4:00pm this afternoon.

Mon 3 May Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo Coogee
A large flock of (exactly) 80 birds was seen flying southwards (towards
a roost?) over Coogee at 4.30 pm.
Michael Tobler

Australian Koel Nobbys Beach Port Macquarie
Immature Koel being fed by Little Wattle birds on the headland and
another seen about 1 km north west in town around 8 am.

Sun 2 May Yellow-faced Honeyeater, Pied Currawong western and
inner Sydney
Good numbers of Pied Currawong moving mostly north and east across the
Kurrajong Hills/Richmond area this morning, some groups up to 30+ birds.
Yellow-faced Honeyeaters seen moving north through same area, and also
many small flocks of up to 8 birds seen across inner Sydney from Redfern
to Moore and Centennial Parks.
Eric Finley

Wedge-tailed Eagle North Richmond and Castlereagh
Unusually, had sightings of 2 separate pairs of Wedge-taileds this
morning in w Sydney - first pair at North Richmond, the other at
Castlereagh (prob same pair reported by John Creswell)

Sat 1 May Brush Bronzewing, Collared Sparrowhawk, Scaly-breasted
and Little Lorikeets Royal National Park, Sydney
On a Follw That Bird Outing I lead, we accidentally flushed one Brush
Bronzewing along the Curra Moors track within a km from the car park.
Also along this trail was a Collared Sparrowhawk, a few Scaly-breasted
Lorikeets, Southern Emu-wren, Fuscous Honeyeater and a Beautiful
Firetail heard. At Wattle Flat near Audley there were a few Rose Robins,
an Azure Kingfisher, Scarlet Honeyeaters and Little Lorikeets heard
overhead

Fri 23 Apr Noisy Pitta Balmain, Sydney
Friends of Peter Marsh found a dead Noisy Pitta in their suburban garden
in Balmain. Peter then forwarded the bird onto Wolter Boles at the
Australian Museum. [This species is very rarely recorded in Sydney these
days, especially inner-suburban Balmain. One made an appearance in
outer-west Sydney at this time last year near Blacktown, MC].

Thu 22 Apr Sooty Owl Gaudrons Road, Sapphire Beach, Coffs Harbour
district
A Sooty Owl was first heard in large eucalypts. It came to within 10
metres with playback recordings, responding to the trilling call. It may
have been stalking flying foxes nearby.
