Published sightings for the week ending 23 May 2010.
Sun 23 May Brush Bronzewing, Scarlet Robin Deep Creek Reserve
This morning there was one male Brush Bronzewing scratching around in
the path just over the footbridge at Deep Creek Reserve. Also seen there
was a female Scarlet Robin. Further up the road on the Chiltern Track,
Ku-Ring-Gai Chase NP, there were 14 different honeyeater species in the
same area.

Australian Logrunner Barrengarry Mountain
I was thrilled to hear two birds calling mid-afternoon. Unfortunately, I
could not locate the birds in the steep terrain's dense undergrowth.
Access off Nowra Rd (entry about 6km from Fitzroy Falls, heading to
Kangaroo Valley). My first record for the Southern Highlands.

Swift Parrot, Blue-faced Honeyeater Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside
(about 5 km west of Blacktown CBD)
This morning I made a short visit to Nurragingy and managed to get at
least one Swift Parrot (they are probably others around still) and a
Blue-faced Honeyeater (the later appears to be a fairly regular
visitor/resident). There were also lots of Musk Lorikeets feeding
amongst the line of small Mugga Ironbarks on the far western end of the
reserve which may be worth checking for the Swift Parrots, though I have
only seen the Swifties feeding on the Forest Gums with lerps close to
the southern end of the main ornamental lake. Lots of muggas and other
ironbarks also in good flower in the surrounding suburbs of the
Blacktown area with plenty of Musk Lorikeets were ever you go.

Speckled Warbler Castlereagh
Again, around 7am this morning in the same location as yesterday. I saw
at least three. They were not overly shy either. The birds were around
and heard for over two hours.

Sat 22 May Arctic Tern, Grey-headed Albatross, Buller's Albatross
SOSSA pelagic, off Wollongong
An excellent day's birding about the 'Sandra K', despite not getting all
the way out to the shelf-break due to the wild conditions. Rarities
included a single Arctic Tern & an imm Grey-headed Albatross both viewed
close to the boat. Good numbers of Buller's Albatross (my pic attached)
were seen with 7 birds together at one stage enjoying the hand-outs.
Among the many highlights were 1 or 2 late imm Arctic Jaegers, several
Brown Skua, imm singles of both Northern & Southern Giant Petrels, the
season's first Fairy Prions in good numbers, about 15+ Wilson's
Storm-Petrels, the year's first Cape Petrels & the odd Short-tailed
Shearwater. Other albatross species seen were a few Wandering (young
Snowy 'exulans'), good numbers of Yellow-nosed (Indian 'carteri'), lots
of Black-browed ('melanophris' & Campbell 'impavida') & also plenty of
Shy (all 'cauta').

Giant Petrel (adult), Fairy Prions, White-fronted Terns,
Great-winged Petrel Magic Pt, Maroubra (Sydney's Eastern suburbs)
Yesterday, David and I saw a good number and variety (19 species) of
seabird for a May sea watch from Magic Pt at Maroubra. The highlight
being what appeared to be an "adult" Giant Petrel (still undertermined
whether Northern or Southern) which I believe as an adult bird is a
"very rare" sighting in Sydney waters (all the birds that visit our
coast appear to be usually dark juvenile and very less frequently white
morph birds (possibly also all young birds). This individual had a
whitish face and pale and mottled under-parts. Also interesting were our
first sighting of the year of Fairy Prions (at least 3 birds) and Brown
Skuas (4 birds) as well good numbers of Albatross including at least 60
Black-browed (3 were Campbell's), 20 Yellow-nosed and 10 Shy Albatross,
a Great-winged Petrel, a Short-tailed, 2 Fluttering and a Hutton's
Shearwater, 500 Australasian Gannet (hundereds diving together in one
tight flock was very impressive), 2 Arctic Jaegers, 4 Kelp Gulls and 2
or 3 White-fronted Terns. A few albatrosses and shearwaters were seen
close to shore allowing possibly good photo opportunities!

Speckled Warbler Castlereagh
While walking my dogs through bushland along Devlin Rd, I stopped to
observe a bunch of small bushbirds in a small tree in which was also a
female Speckled Warbler (chestnut line above eye).

Fri 21 May Australian Brush-turkey Royal Botanic Gardens
They've crossed the harbour - and a new one for the Botanic Gardens bird
list. A Brush-turkey sighted near the Gardens shop this afternoon at
about 3.00pm, obviously enjoying the Palm Grove habitat.

White Bellied Sea Eagle East Killara
A Sea Eagle was seen flying past my backyard twice being mobbed by
Currawongs, Ravens and a Magpie. Not sure if it was one or two different
eagles that were observed. Both times the bird was flying quickly below
tree height, behind my house which backs on to Garigal National Park.
Caused flushing of large flocks of rainbow lorikeets and sulpher-crested
cockatoos. The third sighting of Sea Eagles from this area of late,
first noticed in early April when a pair flew over the house honking
loudly.

Sydney Water
Swift Parrots appeared again in the Meadowbank and West Ryde area. Small

feeding on flowering Swamp Mahagony and Spotted Gums together with big
flocks of Rainbow and Musk lorikeets.
Ted Wnorowski

4 Yellow-nosed and at least 20 Black-browed Albatrosses seen today. Also
a pale morph Arctic Jaeger was playing havoc with the Silver Gulls,
whilst a couple of newly arrived White-fronted Terns worked the base of
the rocks.
