Has anyone heard what the locals think about this? I know they've been very
anti-rat removal in the past.

If this is successful, I hope that it, along with Macquarie (which is about to
undergo a similar program of eradication), will be a precedent for the removal
of rats on other seabird breeding islands like Christmas (which also has a cat
issue).

On both Christmas and Lord Howe, the people living on these islands have been
the biggest stumbling block to get over in obtaining approval for rat
eradication programs sadly. There are residents on Lord Howe, for example,
that think the rats are sustaining the population of introduced owls on the
island. The owls have a special place in the folklore of the island and many
feel they should be protected.

Christmas Island suffers the same fate in that many people in the local
population are cat lovers and do not want to get rid of feral cats roaming the
island, despite the fact that many of the cats are malnourished and in a very
poor state of health. Christmas really needs a multi-pronged eradication
program to remove both cats and rats from the island as removing one would
create issues with the other.

Thanks for your insights onto this project, Chris and others. I for one
completely support it and hope that other island territories can use it as a
good model/case study for utilisation in the future.

Cheers,

Inger
