Gooday birders
Do the Lord Howe folks need any volunteers for a couple of weeks?

Subject: Lord Howe Island Rodent Control Draws Flack
Hi all,
At the 2007 Australasian Ornithological Conference the people in charge
of
designing this program gave a talk. Their plan is to take into
captivity
all Lord Howe Island Woodhens and other endangered species/subspecies
(such
as the Pied Currawong, which has orange eyes there) for the duration of
the
control measures. It's a massive undertaking, driven by the success in
New
Zealand of similarly extreme measures. The rewards for success here are
huge - the possible reintroduction of a number of extinct species, and
ensuring the long term survival of many more.
Rest assured that the people in charge are taking this very seriously,
and
are receiving advice from people who have done this before. I have high
hopes for ths project.
Regards,
Chris
