Ed,
I encountered this limitation problem when planning a trip across the
Kimberley in 2005. None of the major companies would let me take a Land
Cruiser up to the Mitchell Plateau. However, I eventually found a company
that would, Australian 4wd Hire, www.australian4wd.com. At the time major
companies were charging $120/day, I had to pay $189 (over a 17 day hire, the
Black Grasswren, CBBQ and Kimberley Honeyeater cost me a premium of $1,100,
but was well worth the experience). The current quoted rate is a minimum of
$159/day. They also offer a medium 4WD, eg Jeep Wrangler, but state that
these are unsuitable for the Kimberley. They specifically state that you
can take their vehicles anywhere, presumably that means their 4WDs.
Hope this helps, enjoy Oz.
Bob
