Dear all,

During the weekend Regent Honeyeater/Swift Parrot surveys west of Armidale no Regent Honeyeaters were found, but on Sunday there were at least 5 Swift parrots in the Gwydir Park Road TSR (a regular survey site). These will be reported to Debbie Saunders in due course.

The search was eventful, however, because of the discovery of illegal tree felling in two areas - the first was on Saturday where many Mugga Ironbarks had been felled (the fellers were present, eating their lunches). Full details were gathered and passed on to the authorities, after establishing that the area was Crown Land. The second on Sunday in the Gwydir Park Rd TSR was the result, not only of the neighbouring grazier renewing his fence causing a huge amount of tree and understory damage, but there were many trees taken for firewood and fenceposts. This is in spite of several signs erected by authorities saying that the taking of any timber, alive or dead is prohibited!

The collection of firewood in our area is a major concern.
