I would count someone who is interested in birds and nature and wants to access RSPB reserves as a birder - why would they not be counted as one? THere are many possible ways to be a birder ranging from Mike Carter to someone who puts seed out for the local ferals!

BUT

How many members of RSPB are birders? I have been led to believe that many members are members to enable them to access reserves. members get free or cheap admission and other pay dearly. i know of at least two members who are generally interested in birds and nature but are not birders.

Hope this doesn't muck up your maths.

Peter

There is an oft-quoted stat that on every international flight taking off
from Heathrow there are on average four birdwatchers. I was wondering
whether anyone had a source for this stat.

number of RSPB members = 1000000
UK population = 60000000
estimated passengers/plane = 240
240*1000000/60000000 -> 4
