Birding-aus is a mailing list. Its primary uses would be the dissemination
of news-type information amongst subscribers, for people to express their
own opinions, for people to ask others for information, and so forth. I am
not sure that its major purpose would be for research - whether useful or
not.

Why would this be incorrect?

If birding-aus is anything to go on, there is way too much emphasis on 
twitching the latest blow in on some fringe territory than on valuable and 
useful research on (real) Australian bird species.
