Ornithologist = A zoologist who studies birds (dictionary.com)

Bird watcher = A person who observes and identifies birds in their natural
surroundings (dictionary.com)

Twitcher = ...an extreme form of birdwatcher. Um, you know, if you think
your typical view of a birdwatcher is, say, that little old lady that puts
out the seed for the pigeons, well, the twitcher's kind of like an
extreme-sports version of that. They're the type of people that will drop
everything to travel across the country to see a bird that they haven't
seen. And that's called 'the twitch'. (Apologies to Sean Dooley)

I imagine that each of us has a proportion of all three.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think it would be a little rich to
label myself an ornithologist. Nor am I an extreme twitcher. However, I
absolutely will choose to visit places that have species that I haven't seen
and I delight in the thrill of "ticking" a new bird. Equally delightful,
however, is visiting the same location over and over again, in all the
different seasons, and seeing both the familiar and the new birds.

Hi birders
Only recently have I had time to read the March issue of Australian Field
Ornithology. In its editorial Stephen Debus laments the declining submission
of papers. He blames it on twitching: "I think a large part of the problem
lies with the recent development of the 'twitching' malaise, and its
obsession with 'ticks' and rarities, to the detriment of meaningful bird
study."
Quite inappropriate statements in my view, or if anything, unnecessary.

Cheers
