Graham,

The real constraint is that so little money/resources are available for bird
research in Australia (contrasting with US or UK). Simply blaming it on
'twitching' is reminiscent of blaming immigrants for unemployment - vacant
words with no testable science behind them, looking for easy scapegoats.

Why would this be incorrect?

If birding-aus is anything to go on, there is way too much emphasis on 
twitching the latest blow in on some fringe territory than on valuable and 
useful research on (real) Australian bird species.
