It is a well known fact that 86.3% of all statistics are invented! But seems a reasonable analysis, once you assume that all RSPB members are "birders" - and since we don't know how to define a birder (and not all birders would belong to RSPB) then it's probably close to the truth. Doesn't mean they are all going birding on that particular flight though.

number of RSPB members = 1000000
UK population = 60000000
estimated passengers/plane = 240
240*1000000/60000000 -> 4
