Alan and all

That is the sort of organisation I was thinking about but also am happy
to send my old nokkies to those less fortunate in Australia. Is it
possible that each of the regional bird clubs in Australia could have
some sort of collection point or night or someone responsible for
collection of such things. They could then possibly be transported, by
someone moving through the area, to a central collection location and
then shipped to wherever. Surely they could be moved from the wardrobe
to a central collection location for little cost. The logistics of who
repairs and maintains should be the recipients I feel. I would bet there
are very skilled and enterprising people, in those countries, who could
easily repair and maintain them for local costs affordable to the local
people.

Regarding old binoculars: I received this from Brian Sykes of OBC
that maybe of interest to those of you with old, working binoculars.

Maybe it's a Birds Australia thing to set up? Alternatively I am
happy to put anyone who wants to send bins to the Oriental Bird Club
through to Brian.

The benefit of using OBC or similar is that they promote birding,
conservation and other more social aspects to peoples who would never
be able to afford them. Australian children could perhaps be
considered more fortunate than some overseas.

Additionally the note earlier today about Asian waterbirds is of
interest in supporting local communities.

Hi Alan,
Good to hear from you.
Yes 2nd hand bins can be put to good use in many places. The big
problem is getting them where they are needed.
Whenever possible we hand carry them for a lot of obvious reasons.
E.g. I am taking some out to Thailand next month and some are being
carried to Cambodia by another guy going there shortly.
The RSPB is the big repository in UK and it is well known amongst
Brits that is the place to send old bins for them to be put to good
use somewhere in the world.
If there is a big interest in this, I suggest the first step is to
agree an organization or individual who would act in the same way in
Australia.
I guess there are quite a number of worthy recipients on your own
doorsteps too – Lesser Sundas, Papua etc and if we (OBC) knew there
was a cache in Australia, if we had a need in that area we would know
who to ask for help.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Brian.
