Simon, like a few birding-aus list members, I've been to Melaleuca a few
times for the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team summer volunteer program
(partly run by Birds Australia?). I've posted a summary of my trip/s
there to the list about 10 years ago (?). Have a check of the archives
and you should find a few good trip reports. Facilities are minimal
(walkers hut and drop toilet) plus the airstrip and walking tracks down to
the coast about 11 km away.
It's a fabulous part of Australia with plenty of endemics if you have time
to hunt for them (button-grass plains etc). I can heartily recommend
spending time there.
If you do a web search (using Melaleuca and Orange-bellied Parrot for eg.)
there is also some good information.
cheers, Martin
