Andrew & all,
I could be mistaken, however it appears to me that the re-planted vegetation
lining Timbrell park is a re-creation of Swamp Sclerophyll Forest which
once covered much of coastal NSW but is now considered an endangered
ecological environment.
After visiting the location today, I can see how a displaced Bush
Stone-curlew could have found it an enticing place to live.
On the note of dogs however, I agree with what Andrew has said:
"If you were to select areas for dog & owners so that impact on wildlife
is minimized Timbrell is a place you'd pick (my recollection is it is an
off-leash area). What chance to you think you have of keeping dog and
the owners out of national parks, away from wader roosts..."
I guess it is better that a dog kills a single straggling endangered species
in a suburban park rather than let it massacre entire flocks at a wader
roost.
As I stated in a previous email, it appears that in and around our large
citites we have the option to keep our of wildlife, or pets (dogs & cats).
It appears our suburban wildlife has been left for the dogs, quite
literally.
Regards,
Kurtis Lindsay
