I'll make a late and left field entry to this discussion....not a dog or cat
owner.

Where I live the Noisy Miners are by far the dominant repelling force. It is
an urban, lakeside area (western Lake Macquarie NSW) with plenty of open
space and trees. No cat dare stroll around during the day.

Occasionally a Spotted Pardalote makes the mistake of entering the territory
resulting in a sky-high chase; the local Black-faced Cuckoo Shrikes have to
fly out over the lake to get from one patch of bush to another; the autumn
honeyeater migration does give the NM's a nervous breakdown with too many to
chase.

I'll say one thing though for the NM's- they tell you when there is
something interesting around. For example I can keep up with the arboreal
travels of the local Green Tree Snake, discover a Buff-banded Rail trying to
roost in my yard for a night on its way to somewhere, find a lost Squirrel
Glider trying to hide for the day.

It is annoying and a little boring not to have the suite of small birds that
could be around but that's a price of progress!

With the usual sparrows, blackbirds (not as many around this summer) and
starlings we have irregular visitations of Silvereyes, Orange Chats and
about four Redbrowed Finches. The last three not being regular visitors do
not get to close. The dogs and cats still do not make any attempt at chase
or capture.

Hello Terry,

How many Silvereyes, Thornbills or Fairy Wrens come near your pets?
