I had a similar experience many years ago when I was abseiling in
Lamington NP. I was standing at the top of a cliff when a Wedgie flew
past about 20m away. He looked at me then did a tight turn and came past
again less than 10m away. We looked each other in the eye. It was an
extraordinary experience that I will never forget. An intimate moment
with a very special bird.
Merry Christmas to everyone and may you have special birding experiences
in the new year.

I haven't had this happen before-
Was working today (NW of Toronto, NSW Central Coast) in scrubby woodland
collecting vegetation data and noticed a young Wedgy at about 200-300m. Next
thing it was down checking me out and did 4-5 tight circles around me at
tree-top height, I could hear the heavy wing beats. Gradually the circles
widened and it was off again.
Happy xmas birding.
