Courtesy wikipedia, Canola is a group of cultivars ("Canadian oil, low
acid") of Brassica napus. B. napus is often called "rapeseed" but not
suprisingly "Canola" has displaced this name in marketing.

Canola apparently does occur extensively on roadsides in areas where
Canola is grown & transported. Various other species in the same genus
(Brassica) also occur as weeds and crops in Australia. Gene transfer
from canola crops to these species is possible. Gene transfer to some
weeds outside the genus is not impossible. I guess the likelihood and the
importance of such transfer to the environment and birds in particular,
is the difficult question.
