Hi folks,
For those interested, Wathe Flora & Fauna Reserve is embedded in farmland
and about 6000 ha in area so the 2007 fire (4000 ha) has taken out about
two-thirds of the reserve. It is a fantastic mallee reserve established
through the hard work and determination of a local farmer - the late Angus
Torpey - primarily for the Malleefowl. Angus used to monitor some 60 mounds
annually and there are at least two Malleefowl grids being monitored by the
Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group at present. A previous fire (~800 ha
from memory) went through in 1991 and took out three of my nine long-term
fire study sites established in 1985. Two of those nine sites had the
Striated Grasswren but I have not recorded any since the 1991 fire and am
not sure whether anyone else has anywhere in the reserve. Wathe has already
apparently lost the Mallee Emu-wren (formerly recorded by Angus) as a survey
last year failed to find any. So, let us hope that this week's fire has not
caused any further local extinctions and that the good rains lead to a rapid
rejuvenation of the burnt areas.

Hi all,
Greg Sanderson has just rung me to say that the area around Gama has just
had over 3 inches of rain, and that the nearby 4000 ha Lascelles - Wathe FFR
fire is under control. At Gama he saw up to 3 Black Honeyeater (including
one male) and 15 White-fronted Honeyeater near the corner of Gama Sea Lake
Rd & Sunraysia Hwy.
I've also noticed (via the excellent DSE Fire Emergency site mentioned by
Martin below) that the 15000 ha Little Desert-Salt Lake Track fire is under
control.

Bill, some information for you on the Wathe fire situation.
The fire at Lascelles - Wathe area of public land has burnt 4 000 hectares
including 160 ha of private land. I understand that much of the Wathe
Flora and Fauna Reserve has been burnt.
