Not sure about counting spaces and hyphens but using Steves methodology

Black-backed Three-toed Woodpecker = 34 characters Page 572 Northwestern Yellow-bellied Sapsucker = 37 characters Page 565

which is virtually the average according to:  Gill, F. and M. Wright.
