The chances of getting to Cape York during the middle of the wet (Jan-Mar)
would be slim and the chances of getting back even slimmer. That said, it
is by far the finest time of year to go there - no dust or corrugations!

I'm only familiar with the northern Cape around Bamaga and to the top but
about 10 years ago you could easily fly up to Bamaga and hire a car to drive
around the far northern area from either Bamaga or Seisia. Depending on
just how wet it is (the seasons are VERY variable) it can be easy to get
around or impossible to even travel the 32kms from Bamaga to the top. The
birding isn't quite as good with no Eclectus Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrot or
Green-backed Honeyeater though all the other CY endemics are there. During
the wet season I spent up there Red-bellied Pittas were common and easy to
locate - their colours are a lot easier to pick out than their Noisy
friends. I would also imagine chances of a genuine rarity may be higher
right at the top.

G'day,
Monsoonal Climates can be highly variable. This is particularly so when
looking at the beginning of the season. In the lists for Weipa below,
extracted from the BOM site the first figure is January and the second
December because of where we start the new year so read them backwards you
clever people. There is for instance a lot of difference between 859.6 mm
and 40.9 mm, particularly if you are the 'wrong' side of a river when 200 mm

falls overnight. Weipa is not a particularly wet place either!

Mean Rainfall (mm)
   446.9 263.9
Median (Decile 5) Rainfall (mm)
_ 417.1 252.0
Decile 9 Rainfall (mm)
_ 733.4 435.8
Decile 1 Rainfall (mm)
_ 215.6 102.1

Highest Monthly Rainfall (mm)
  1112.0 859.6
Lowest Monthly Rainfall (mm)
   164.2 40.9
Highest Recorded Daily Rain (mm)
   279.2 191.6

Lockhart River is on the other side of the Cape, 462.3 mm is a lot of rain
for one day even in that part of the world!

Mean Rainfall (mm)
   384.0 233.5

Highest Monthly Rainfall (mm)
   783.9 965.9
Lowest Monthly Rainfall (mm)
   104.2 15.4
Highest Recorded Daily Rain (mm)
   175.3 462.3

Regards,
Alan
