Hi all,
re the Swamphen - Gallinule question, firstly martinica is a different species
and commonly named here in the UK where it is an extreme vagrant (one record
from 1958) as American Purple Gallinule. There are about ten records for the
whole of Europe.

The usage of Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus indicates the race reffered to, in
this case melanotus and the correct usage of Porphyrio porphyrio would be when
reffering to the nominate form, there are numerous races.

Secondly regarding the actual common name, there has been much debate over the
standardisation of world bird names here in Europe generally and this species
is one where it's seems the more modern approach is to abandon Gallinull for
Swamphen.

Regards, Andy
