Hi Judith,
It would be worthwhile looking at the Pentax K100D, which is a full digital SLR and can be picked up from just under $900, depending on the lens. This gives you the advantage of being able to use any Pentax K mount lens ever made and it has shake reduction. I have used a Pentax *istD which is very similar,for nearly three now with great results.

One point to remember about viewfinders is make sure it is a true optical. I have a Fuji FinePix S 5500, which is a great little camera, but it has a miniature LCD screen view finder, like most video camera. The image in the finder is fuzzier and it has the problem of image lag when you follow a moving object, to the point where I find myself "chimping" more and more.
