Hi Judith,

I have a Panasonic Z30 which accepts the Olympus Tcon-17 teleconverter - The
two together give you the equivalent of around 725mm in a 35mm camera. The
Z30 is an 8 megapixel camera so detail is pretty good. This camera has an
image stabiliser - see
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=panasonic_dmcfz30
for a bunch of user reviews (not all complimentary).

The camera plus teleconverter can be had for under $1000

As already stated, noise is visible on these types of cameras, but can be
reduced by any good paint program afterwards.
