Yes, there are different sorts of generators in different sorts of
grids in different sorts of locations which are in the habitat of
different sorts of birds.
The setups that seem to have the highest mortalities are the masses of
closely spaced, relatively small generators with high blade speeds set
in mountain passes. The much larger, widely spaced generators with
slower blade speeds used in Aus seem to pose much less of a threat to
bird life.

If you Google for "wind farm bird mortality" you will find a wide
variety of reports which prove they have no impact or are putting all
birds in danger of extinction - depending on who wrote them. I would
guess it depends on the location of the farm for a start. I assume the
reality is somewhere between the two extremes!

I've heard some crazy rumours that Power Generating Windmills are
terrible for birds, particularly migrating birds. Has anyone seen any
studies or have an opinion on the subject? It seems silly to me, most
birds are pretty intelligent, easily smart enough to avoid a large
stationary object, and those not intelligent enough (I reckon the
Crested Pigeons near my house would struggle) are shy enough to just
stay away from something so foreign and noisy.
