I bought a pair of Nikon 4 x 42 Monarchs about 18 months ago and have
never regretted choosing these. I compared them with Swarovskis and
others, and couldn't justify an extra $1000+ for several reasons:
I'd be reluctant to take $2K bins some of the places I go birding and
I'm fairly hard on my gear
Sometimes I have to leave my bins in the car - I really couldn't do
that with super expensive gear
I wanted a good digital camera and for the price of the Nikons, could
get both for less than the price of Swarovskis!
... but mainly because after 4 and half decades of use, my eyes
couldn't register any significant difference between the Monarchs and
the $2K bins.
If I'd been still 25 and single I'd probably have bought the Swarovskis
though ...

None of the above....
My wife and I each got Pentax 8x42 DCF WP binoculars a few years back
and absolutely love them. (This model was taken out of production and
replaced by a slightly enhanced version.) At a fraction of the cost of
Zeiss/Swarovski/Leica, it's not such a worry to tote them around.
They're waterproof, have a short minimal focal distance, do great in
bright light and low light, and bring a great deal of color with
excellent clarity. I've had a hard time actually seeing the optical
superiority of bins costing 3-4x as much. (To be fair, everyone's eyes
are different.) They're comfortable in the hand, sturdy, and, as
mentioned, fully waterproof.
If you find a less-expensive (although not cheap) set of binoculars,
you can also spend the extra money on a nice trip ;-)
