What's with this "17 foot diameter circle" business? We went metric
thirty years ago ...

I'd say that approach would be well suited to North American
tree-sitting types. Perhaps a more suitable approach to this part of
the world would be to apply atlassing rules - eg birds observed within a single atlas area [eg 5 km radius] over a 24 hr period, or say a
dozen 20 min 2ha sites in 24 hrs.

Hi All,

I'm seeking interest in a possible new event for the 2004 Twitchathon –
an event sometimes called 'The Big Sit'. Based on a race first
organised by members of the New Haven Bird Club in the United States,
the aim is to see who can see as many different bird species in a
static position over a 24-hour period. Basically it works like this:
you mark off a 17 foot diameter circle that your team must stay within
the confines of, and then try and identify as many species of birds in
24 hours. Of particular note is a call by the New Haven Birds Club for
international challenges, currently teams are organised in the United
States and Canada. If there are any interested participants, we could
integrate and coordinate this event through the formal processes of the
twitchathon.
