The Big Sit

Hi Tim

Great idea!

I've a few birding friends who have Big Sat in the US, and I've quite
fancied the idea for some time as an alternative to the "twitch" or Big Day
style of event - which can sometimes tend towards a hectic car rally with
occasional birding thrown in. I mean an additional alternative of course,
the two events not being mutually exclusive but just providing different
sets of challenges to perhaps overlapping sets of birders.

For my part, I think a circle containing a verandah, comfy chairs, coffee
(or whatever), with an adjacent bathroom could well be the way to go. My
understanding is that whereas every bird recorded must be seen from within
the circle, it is entirely in order to leave the circle for a better look or
to confirm an id, or to replenish from the kitchen or visit that convenient
bathroom. It could be a bit tough having to sit there all day long, just
birding - but I'd be prepared to give it a go.

What sorts of numbers of species do people turn up?

Yes, telescopes are allowed. Which obviously suggests that the optimum
place run the big sit would be an area with a good views (such as a
looking over a valley or near coastal cliffs for pelagics), with two or
three habitat types behind you.

Alternatively however, you could easily set the boundry for the big sit
in your own backyard, sitting under your favorite flowering gum (having
a barbie or sipping G&Ts or a beer on your balcony in the evening, and
having coffee and criossant in the morning). Not a bad way to raise
money for bird conservation and research! (Which sounds very Australian
to me Laurie!)

Cheers,

Tim
